Assessment Program
Our elementary school’s assessment program is designed to provide a comprehensive and balanced approach to measuring student progress and informing instruction throughout the year. We utilize both local and state assessments to ensure that we are meeting the diverse needs of our students and supporting their academic growth.
Local Assessments:
We administer the Renaissance STAR assessments in reading and math at multiple benchmark periods during the year, typically at the beginning, middle, and end of the year. These computer-adaptive tests provide timely, actionable data that allow teachers to monitor student progress, identify areas of strength and need, and adjust instruction accordingly. The ongoing nature of these assessments supports a responsive and differentiated approach to teaching and learning, ensuring that every student receives the support they need to succeed.
State Summative Assessments:
Each spring, students participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) system, which provides a summative perspective on student achievement from year to year.
- Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments in English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) and Mathematics are administered to students in grades 3–6. These computer-based assessments measure students’ mastery of the rigorous California Common Core State Standards and assess critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical writing skills.
- California Science Test (CAST) is given to all 5th grade students, assessing their understanding of the California Next Generation Science Standards.
- English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) are administered annually to English learners in all grades to measure their progress in English language development.
- Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is administered to all 5th grade students each spring, evaluating their physical health and fitness as part of the state’s requirements2.
By combining the ongoing, formative data from classroom teachers, Renaissance STAR with the annual, summative data from CAASPP and other state assessments, our school ensures a well-rounded picture of each student’s progress. This balanced assessment system allows us to celebrate growth, identify areas for further support, and maintain high expectations for all learners.
