Physical Education
Monroe Elementary’s physical education program is dedicated to fostering healthy lifestyles, good nutritional habits, and strong sportsmanship among all students. Every student receives 100 minutes per week of PE, delivered by a credentialed teacher and grounded in California’s physical education standards, ensuring instruction is both developmentally appropriate and rigorous. Our curriculum emphasizes not only motor skills, problem-solving and physical fitness, but also the importance of making healthy choices and demonstrating respect and teamwork in all activities.
Students have a wide range of opportunities to stay active and engaged. At lunch, they can participate in intramural sports such as flag football, soccer, basketball, and hockey. Each spring, upper-grade students are invited to represent Monroe at the annual county track meet, where students from all over the county compete at Westmont College in track and field events. Monroe’s playground is equipped with a variety of activities for both PE and recess, encouraging socialization through play and movement. These include gaga ball, disc golf, swings, big toys, volleyball, handball, four square, and a fleet of bicycles, plus alternative bikes for students with extensive needs.
Monroe partners with Move SB to provide bicycle and pedestrian safety courses each year. We promote healthy habits through monthly walk, roll, and bike to school events. Students with extensive needs receive additional PE classes tailored to their abilities, ensuring everyone has the chance to participate and thrive. Through this comprehensive program, Monroe Elementary is committed to helping every child build lifelong habits of health, fitness, and positive social interaction.
