Science Overnight Astrocamp - 5th Grade

Monroe School is proud to partner with Guided Discoveries’ AstroCamp to provide our 5th grade students with an unforgettable, hands-on science learning experience. AstroCamp, located in Idyllwild, California, is a renowned outdoor science school that specializes in immersive, experiential STEM education for students in grades 4.

During this overnight camp, our students participate in a variety of engaging activities, including building and launching rockets, exploring the night sky through astronomy labs, and tackling high ropes challenges—all designed to spark curiosity and deepen understanding of physical and environmental sciences.

The benefits of attending AstroCamp are significant. Students gain access to state-of-the-art science labs and equipment, allowing them to conduct experiments and investigations that go far beyond what is possible in a traditional classroom setting. The camp’s unique, hands-on approach fosters a love of science, builds confidence, and encourages teamwork and problem-solving skills. Additionally, the overnight experience helps students develop independence, strengthen friendships, and create lasting memories.

Through the fundraising efforts of our amazing Monroe PTA, we are able to partner with AstroCamp to inspiring our students to become enthusiastic learners and future leaders in science and beyond.

Overnight Camp - 6th Grade Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI)

Our elementary school is proud to partner with the Guided Discoveries Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI) to offer our 6th grade students an unforgettable overnight, hands-on science camp experience. CIMI is a renowned STEM-based outdoor science school located on Catalina Island, providing immersive marine science education for students in grades 4–12. During this multi-day adventure, students participate in activities such as snorkeling over rocky reefs, exploring marine science labs, hiking island trails, and engaging in interactive lessons about ocean ecology and conservation.

This partnership directly supports the California 6th grade science standards by giving students real-world opportunities to investigate ecosystems, biodiversity, and earth’s systems in a living laboratory. Through experiential learning, students observe marine organisms up-close, collect data, and apply scientific practices aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), deepening their understanding of concepts like food webs, adaptation, and environmental stewardship.

Beyond academics, CIMI challenges students to step outside their comfort zones, build self-confidence, and develop teamwork and leadership skills. The camp’s expert instructors, all with backgrounds in marine science, create a supportive environment where students can grow personally and academically.

This unique experience not only sparks a lifelong curiosity for science but also strengthens our school’s core values of compassion, achievement, and respect, making CIMI a highlight of our 6th grade year.
