We are looking forward to a wonderful year with the second grade students. We have many exciting enrichment activities planned for this year including field trips and outreach programs.
For example: the Museum of Natural History, Stowe House, Santa Barbara Art Museum, Nature Trek and guest speakers in the classroom.
During our Language Arts time we use the Open Court curriculum, which explores the following themes: Sharing Stories, Kindness, Look Again, Fossils, Courage, Our Country and It’s People. Three research projects will highlight the integration of all of our studies.
Students will develop writing skills through the genres of Narrative, Informational, and Opinion formats.
In Math we will be studying number sense, adding and subtracting to 100, committing to memory addition facts to 20, place and value of 2 and 3 digit numbers up to 1,000, mental addition and subtraction, problem solving involving money up to 100, measuring time and money, geometry, fractions, foundations of multiplication, exploring odd and even numbers and arrays, using the Envision Program, Context For Learning, Engage NY, and Math tasks created by the state of Georgia.
Families Now and Long Ago, Market Place, Land and Water Resources and People Make A Difference are the themes we will cover in our Social Studies Curriculum.
Research and experiments are an integral part of our science curriculum in the areas of Solids, Liquids and Gases, Pebbles, Sand and Silt and Interdependency of Insects and Plants.
Students participate in group projects and presentations within the classroom, as well as collaborate with other classes during differentiated learning times.
